Langdon [which means ‘Long hill’] dates back to the Saxon period, and has a beautiful country park offering panoramic views over the Thames Estuary and towards London. The ancient woodlands around this Green Flag Award park date back to prehistoric times, and there are also areas of dense scrubland, meadows full of wildflowers including carpets of bluebells, and an abundance of trees such as the rare ‘wild service tree’. Langdon Hills Country Park has a vast variety of wildlife with insects, butterflies, and many types of bird, you can for instance hear the calls of all three native species of woodpecker. Numerous types of bird can be observed in the vicinity, and many can be watched at the winter bird feeding station.
The two main sections of Langdon Hills Country Park cover 400 acres, and are sometimes used for corporate team building exercises. Groups can be set challenges and develop strategies in the open spaces, where inhibitions need not be a concern. Friendly park rangers perform tasks in addition to cleaning and tidying, like tree-felling, haymaking, educational visits, demonstrations and shows. Rayleigh Castle is an excellent example of a Motte and Bailey castle site, and one of the best of several in Essex. Surrounded by a wide rampart that forms a bailey on one side, the castle mound is set within a ditch. Rayleigh castle existed in the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, and is thought to have been erected shortly after the Norman Conquest by Sweyn of Essex, son of Robert fitz Wymarc. It ceased to be inhabited in 13th century. There is a windmill in the vicinity which displays the history of Rayleigh Castle mound.
Rayleigh Mount is the remains of Rayleigh Castle and is an area of relaxing tranquillity for a family day out. There are views to enjoy, open air performances, historic educational walks, and wildlife to study. Outdoor theatre events include plays by Shakespeare, comedies and children’s shows.
